Difference in user interface (UI) design and user experience (UX)

We want to look at the interface, user experience, and their difference in this article. Which is more important? it is good enough to have a strong user interface and a bad user experience?

Both the UI designer and the user experience designer (UX) are essential to achieving the ultimate product and should work together. Despite these roles and responsibilities, the two are very different. Design is a technical and analytical thematic user experience, while the interface design is more closely related to what we know as graphic design, although it has a much complexity to it.

If you consider a product like the human body, the codes are the same as the bones that form the body. The organs also represent a user experience design that measures and optimizes the human body’s inputs for survival. The interface design is like the outside of the body, such as feelings and reactions, your looks, and generally what is seen from the outside.

User interface design and user experience design are one of the most confusing debates in our work, and many people use these two concepts mistakenly. A user interface, without a user experience, is like a painter who, without any idea, throws his/her paint on the canvas.

While user-friendly user experience is like a sculpture template that is empty. An ideal product sense starts with a good user experience design, followed by a good user interface design. Both of them are necessary to achieve a successful product.

What is UX design?

According to Wikipedia, user experience design (UXD or UED) is a process of improving customer satisfaction and loyalty by improving the usability, ease of use and pleasures offered in the interaction between the client and the product.

In your opinion, this definition may be ambiguous, specially since there has not been any mentions of digital technology or concepts. In general, summarizing a process in the form of a few words has always been difficult.

Some of the ambiguities in definitions are due to the novelty of this concept. Dan Norman, a cognitive scientist and founder of the Nilsson Norman Design Advisory Group, commented on the importance of user experience:

The user experience includes all aspects of the user interaction with the company, services and products of the company.

User experience designer (UX) must be actively involved in the process of research, evaluation, development, content, and prototyping for product quality assessment. The design of the user experience is a non-digital concept related to cognitive science but is mainly defined and applied in the digital domain.

What is UI design?

Although the conceptual interface design is older and more used, due to misconceptions, it is difficult to find an answer to the question “What is an interface design?”. While the user experience is a set of tasks focused on product optimization for use with user pleasure and enhanced performance. Its user interface design is complementary and embraces the shape and appearance, sensation and attractiveness of the product. Like designing a user experience, user interface design is also multifaceted and challenging. The user interface designer is responsible for turning the content, design, and appearance of a product into an attractive experience for the user.

Unlike the UI, User Experience (UX) is a completely digital concept. The role of the interface design for each digital interface and its users in terms of brand awareness and brand trust is essential. Eventhought the promotion of brand awareness and brand confidence is not specifically the responsibility of the user interface designer!

The latest role of the user interface designer is to implement the design with the help of a developer. In the past, there was no difference between the designer and the developer. But today, the web designer (who is actually the same user interface designer that has the ability to write code) is known as the user interface designer. While the user experience designer does not need to know to code. The design of the user interface is based on the creation of attractive user interfaces with the passage of time and over time, evolves, and changes.

In general, it can be said that the interface design consists of three parts of the product:

  • Sense: Includes action and product response in relation to user input or display environments different
  • Skin: Includes visual and graphic representation of the product
  • Makeup: Includes instructions and tips and guides that help the user experience better.

The user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) are complementary. Both of them are necessary in the product to create a pleasant experience for the user, and one can not be preferred over another.

What looks great but difficult to handle is a good UI and a weak UX, and unlike what’s easy to work with and looks bad, it’s a good UX and a weak UI.
